How many types of printers are there? what is the Dpi and what is the PPM ?

Types of Printers: Inkjet and Laser

There are two main types of printers: inkjet and laser. The primary consumables for these printers are ink for inkjets and toner for laser printers. Inkjet printer consumables are generally more expensive, costing about $1 per sheet, whereas toner for laser printers is cheaper, around 10 cents per sheet.

DPI (Dots Per Inch)

DPI is a critical parameter for measuring a printer’s resolution. It refers to the number of dots that a printer can produce per inch. For example, a printer with a 300 DPI can print 300 dots per inch. The higher the DPI value, the finer the quality of the printout, though this also means longer output times.

PPM (Pages Per Minute)

PPM is an essential metric for assessing the print speed of non-impact printers. It stands for “Pages Per Minute,” indicating the number of pages that the printer can produce in one minute. For example, a printer with a 4 PPM can print four pages per minute. Note that this rate decreases by about half in environments using Chinese characters. Additionally, this speed is an average when printing continuously; printing only one page might take a full minute, but printing ten pages could take just four minutes.

  • HP
